While compact premium crossovers continue to be among the most sought after vehicles for Canadian consumers, the choice for fuel-saving "green" models is slim. Audi no longer offers hybrid and TDI versions of its Q5, and Benz has temporarily stepped out of the diesel arena for the GLC-Class compact crossover. That leaves the aging BMW X3 xDrive28d, the bigger and pricier Jaguar F-Pace 2.0d, and this, the gasoline-electric NX 300h hybrid.
The NX 300h shares its basic platform and powertrain with the Toyota RAV4 Hybrid, but has its own distinct styling and a posh-looking interior to set it apart from its sibling. The interior of the NX Hybrid is finished with premium materials including a stitched soft-touch plastic dashboard, while the seats are wrapped in supple NuLuxe synthetic leather upholstery. Unlike some of its rivals, the NX’s dashboard is well organized, with a tablet-style display at the top of the centre stack, and clearly organized HVAC controls below.
For 2017, the only change of note is the addition of Vortex Blue Metallic to the colour pallet.
Overall cabin space is good for such a compact vehicle; rear seat legroom is decent, and the rear bench offers a power recline function. Trunk space is decent at 475 litres, a 25-litre reduction compared to the standard gas-powered model.
At the heart of the NX 300h is a 2.5-litre four-cylinder gasoline engine that's paired to an electric motor and a CVT transmission. This setup drives the front wheels. To provide all-wheel traction, the NX 300h uses a dedicated 67-horsepower electric motor that drives the rear axle; for the most part, it functions as a front-wheel-drive vehicle, providing its boost only when traction is needed. Together, the total net output of the system is 194 hp, which is not far off the pace of some competitors but trails the standard turbocharged NX 200t, which develops 235 hp.
The NX 300h also has selectable drive modes with Eco, Standard, and Sport modes which change throttle response. An EV mode allows the vehicle to be driven exclusively on electric power for short distances. The NX has a fuel economy rating of 7.1 L/100 km city and 7.7 L/100 km highway, making it among the most economical crossovers on the market.
The NX 300h is available in one model with one optional upgrade package.
Standard equipment on the NX 300h is more generous than the NX 200t and includes standard luxuries such as a power tilt and telescoping steering column with heated steering wheel, heated and ventilated front power seats, driver memory, navigation with reverse camera, integrated garage door opener, power tailgate, 120-volt power outlet, aluminum roof rails, 18-inch alloy wheels, a power moonroof, and auto-dimming side-view mirrors.
The Executive Package includes clearance and backup sensors, rain-sensing wipers, full LED headlamps with auto-leveling, woodgrain trim, head-up display, wireless device charging, plus blind-spot monitoring and rear cross-traffic alert. Opting for the Executive Package is the only way that the NX Hybrid can be equipped with radar cruise control, emergency autonomous braking, automatic high beams, and lane-keeping assist.
Unlike the NX 200t, the NX 300h is not available with the F Sport package.
Pricing for the 2017 NX 300h starts at $54,150 for the standard model, and $60,800 for the Executive Package.
